Lately...

We've actually had some cooler evenings the past few days and we are taking advantage of being able to play outside!

Making a "Woowoo castle." That's what he
calls a sand castle!

My boys!

I think this picture looks JUST LIKE my
dad when he was little.

While Daddy was away...

Lance went on his annual World Changers trip with the youth last week, so it was just me and Sawyer for the first part of the week and then we went to Asheboro Tuesday night.

He told me he was taking a picture of Blue and Magenta.

Rest Time!

I filled the sink with water and let him
play....he LOVED it!

He had been asking for a Brobee cake, so
I told him we'd make one at Mush and Papa's.
When we got there, they already had it made

for him! He thought it was awesome!

Watching Elmo with Uncle Adam!

Bubble bath during Mommy's evening to herself!

Playing in the pool with Papa...seriously one of the cutest
things EVER!
We had such a great time in Asheboro and were sad to leave, but SO happy to see Lance when he got home!

Sawyer: 2 Years, 3 Months

Sleeping:
- Napping is a thing of the past. Maybe once every couple of weeks he'll take one, but most days I just make him go to his bed for an hour/hour and a half or he gets to lay on the couch with his blanket and paci for "rest time."
- He goes down at 7:30pm and most days is up by 7am.
- He still has his paci but ONLY for naps and night night. Occasionally he'll find one laying around and sneak around with it!

Eating:
- Sawyer has been eating like a man...seriously. Some evenings he eats more for dinner than I do!
- He's still not a big breakfast fan. He's good with his cup of Carnation Instant Breakfast and a late morning snack.

- He gets better and better with his utensils and big boy cup.
- Sometimes I think he wants to be a vegetarian. He still doesn't eat very much meat.
- Favorite things to eat include black olives, "cookies" (sugar wafers), corn on the cob, hummus, blueberries, yogurt, cheese, lima beans, broccoli, spaghetti, and dried fruit.
- He likes for me to put orange or lemon slices in his water...which I think is awesome because he's wanting water more than juice!
- He calls fried squash, "chips" and he LOVES it!

Talking:
- It seems that he says new words and phrases everyday! This is such a fun stage!
- It's been so much fun watching him talk to his friends and they actually understand him and talk back!
- He suddenly started calling me "Na Na" instead of Mama....I have no idea where it came from. I'll ask him to repeat a list of "m" words and he says them all correctly...just wants to say "NaNa" I guess?!
- He likes to call Mush and Papa on the phone. And, if anyone calls he'll say "Hi ___, What doin?!"

Social Skills:
- He's much more "friendly" these days with adults. Before he would just hide his face or look the other way if someone spoke to him, but he's becoming a little more social and will give high fives or hugs to people at church.
- We still struggle with some separation anxiety, especially with the crazy month we've had. If he gets out of his routine, being away from mommy is harder for him.
- Sharing is not one of his favorite things to do...though if he wants something you have, he'll tell you to share!
- He's starting to figure out when things are funny...if something silly happens on a tv show, he laughs now. So cute!

Playing/Learning:
- He loves counting and lining things up.
- He will actually sit and let me read an entire book to him.
- Sawyer has really been into his train tracks.
- He asks me to paint and color all the time.

Discipline:
- I think we had a parent fail in the area of discipline. During our week long vacation at the beach, he was being SO good that we let things slide when we shouldn't have. Not a good idea. It's been discipline boot camp lately.
- Sawyer is testing the waters...and finding excuses not to do things. WOW...didn't realize it happened so young! He has learned the word "first" and what it means so if I tell him to do something he'll say "I wanna ___ first."
- We've seen LOTS of temper tantrums this month and we continue to talk about his attitude and how we don't always get what we want!

Spiritual Growth:
- Most days he says his own prayer at lunch, but if too many people are around he'll ask me to pray. His prayer is usually "Thank You, God, for food. In Jesus' name, amen!"
- We continue to use the Hide 'Em in Your Heart" cd's right now for scripture memory. His favorite at the moment is "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." So precious to hear him sing this!

Game

This evening I took Sawyer to Wendy's to get a frosty. We also stopped by the church to take one to Lance and hang out with the youth for a bit! We watched them while they played a game called "Death Hack." (Even after watching it, I'm not sure what the point of it is or the rules of the game!)

But, Sawyer LOVED watching them. He sat perfectly still beside me as we watched and would say "Go Dada!" or "Yay Dada!" and clap his hands. I encouraged him to tell the boys not to get the "gouls" (girls).

I think he's gonna be competitive like his daddy because after watching two games he was standing up saying "I want play game!" "Deedee turn!" "I want turn!" Lance let him come out and play one game and the youth were so sweet to be gentle and let him have a few turns!

As soon as Lance got home Sawyer was saying "Dada...game?" They played until he had to go to bed. So cute!

Contentment

Not one of my usual blog posts, but it's been on my heart, so I thought I'd share...

Last Sunday we had a guest preacher at church and he spoke on stewardship and the fact that EVERYTHING we have comes from God.

At one point during his sermon, a feeling of pure contentment overwhelmed me.

All my life I've been a people pleaser and being a pastor's wife doesn't help that much! I've often felt (not by anyone else's pressures, just my own) like I have to "keep up with the Jones" whether it's how I look, or how my child looks, or even how my house is decorated, or how good of a cook or housekeeper I am...can we say pride??

But on Sunday, as the pastor was talking about how every gift that we have is from God, I was convicted of being prideful, being jealous, being discontent....

And at that point, I resolved to be content...even with my mish mosh of hand-me-down furniture, and homemade decor because I can't (and won't) shop at expensive stores for the trendiest look, and clothes that you would never see on a runway, and a house that looks like a toddler runs around playing all day, and a yard that will not grow anything but moss....

I resolve to be content because my GOOD and GRACIOUS Father in heaven, out of His goodness has blessed me with more than I need or deserve...and not because of merit or any goodness on my part...but just because He chose to do it.

I resolve to be content because His provision has allowed me to be at home with a precious little boy, because I have food to eat and a house to live in...and even things like running water and warmth and coolness, and many "things" that I don't even need. I resolve to be content...even when life gets stressful and hard and scary and sad....because I have GOD...and He's more than enough....and because he has given me the best gift EVER...life spent in eternity with Him....

A boy and his Daddy!

My heart overflows with joy when I see these two do things like this....

Helping Daddy shave!

"Ride, Dada?!" Lance gives him a ride on
his back nearly every night before we put
him to bed. Sweetness!

Paint

We've been doing a lot of painting this week with all the rain and yucky weather we've had. I think Sawyer enjoys lining up the paints and counting them more than actually painting. (I know, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! He's an organizer like his mommy!)

Sawyer's Sayings and Doings...

Sawyer was standing on his stool in the bathroom talking and looking at himself in the mirror. I stopped in the hallway and this is what I heard: "Sawyer got shirt, Sawyer got hair, Sawyer got eyes, Sawyer got nose, Sawyer got mouth, Sawyer got ears."

When you ask Sawyer a question he'll say "Ummm, hmmmm" while putting his pointer finger on his chin. Hilarious.

Lots of mornings he wakes up saying "Mama, I want a tissue." Poor guy has allergies like his aunt Mimi!

He likes to call Mush on the phone....he calls her nearly everyday now. I LOVE that!

Lance played golf Friday morning and Sawyer and I were out running errands. While we were in the car he asked, "Dada golf?" "Yep, Dada is playing golf," I responded. "I want play golf too." "Deedee play golf Dada!" (Papa and Dada, this needs to happen soon!) I even called Lance while he was playing to tell him this...it was SO stinkin' cute!

"I want pictures of Deedee," is what he tells me everytime I get on the computer. He loves to look through my Facebook albums!

"Show you" is what he tells us when he grabs our hands and tries to lead us somewhere.

He's started asking "Why?" Geez Louise. I really try to give him answers, but sometimes I have to use the good 'ole "Because I said so!"

I found some crayon markings on our bedspread the other day. When I asked Sawyer what happened he said "Aidan color!" Oh my.....Aidan can't even reach that part of the bed!

Grammy was here today and I gave her a little makeover. Sawyer sat in the bathroom with us and saw us putting makeup on. Several times today he said "Color eyes?!" Again...oh my!

If Sawyer sees Lance getting ready in the morning and Lance doesn't have a shirt on, Sawyer immediately asks to take his shirt off!

And, I'll leave you with a picture of my joyful little boy....he had just fallen backward in his tent...and he was laughing hysterically!

Laundry

Sawyer helped me fold and put away laundry the other day...

He keeps me laughing all day!

Summer Vacation!

We had such a great vacation last week! Sawyer and I headed to Asheboro early Saturday morning and spent the night. Mush and Papa had bought a pretty cool pool and some toys for Sawyer! Meredith and Adam joined us for a delicious dinner Saturday evening! Sunday I went to church with Meredith and then packed up and headed to the lake. Lance joined us after youth Sunday night!

That would be two grandparents that are totally
smitten! I LOVE this picture!

Mush was "shooting" him with the water gun!

At 6:30, he told us he was going night-night....even went
around and gave hugs and kisses, but I didn't really
think he'd go to sleep. How wrong I was! He climbed
up on the couch and went right to sleep!

Sunday, Sawyer and I got settled in and got to hang out with Uncle Brent all day. Brent even let Sawyer skype with Ali! He's such a good uncle!

Monday, my parents and sister came down to hang out for the day. Mama, Meredith, and I  took Sawyer to "The Point" which is a little man-made beach while Lance and Daddy took the boat out on the lake! Mama and I took the paddle boat out...and luckily, I learned to steer it by the end of our ride! Monday night Brent and Meredith kept Sawyer so Lance and I got to go on a date. We went to one of our favorite places...Mellow Mushroom (and brought some back for the babysitters!)

Me and Lance on the paddle boat!

Tuesday morning Lance, my sister, Sawyer, and I went to the playground, but at 9:00 the slides were already too hot for his little legs! So, we headed to The Point again...and basically had it all to ourselves.  Tuesday night, Brently made us "Krispy Kreme" burgers...basically you cut a donut in half, and make it your "bun"....pretty tasty!

On the dock with Brently! I'm so thankful
for the time they spent together this week.
Even though Brently had TONS of studying to

do, he spent so much time playing with Sawyer.
You rock, Uncle Brent!

The boys outside cooking our burgers!

Wednesday we celebrated the 4th of July with some of our closest friends. The Lester's, Harden's and McCandless' came down for the day with their kiddos....there were 7 adults and 6 kiddos. We had a blast!! The kids were so good...and they didn't even nap!

Playing while the mommies made lunch!

He loved dipping his head in the pool!

All the babies in the pool!

Thursday we took Sawyer down to the beach again. There were tons of fish and if you got really still they would circle you (and even nip your bum!) To say that Sawyer loved the water would be an understatement. He is such a water baby...loved floating on his back, was very confident and independent in the water, let me dunk him under the water, didn't mind water in his face. We got him a really cool "floatie" called a Puddle Jumper and it may be the best investment we've made! It keeps him totally afloat, even in deeper water and allows him to kick his feet and paddle his arms. Awesome! There was a family there playing "Marco Polo" and Sawyer learned to say "polo" at the right time! He was also obsessed with taking his "peoples" to swim with him! Brent and Lance golfed that afteroon and later that night, Uncle John, Aunt Tammy, and cousins Daniel, Michael, and Katherine came and had dinner with us! We adore their family and had so much fun hanging out with them! We're excited that Daniel will be going to Liberty in the fall because one, it's a great school, and two, they will pass our house everytime they go see him so we'll be seeing them more!

Breakfast with Daddy!

The whole place to ourselves!

Sawyer wearing his puddle jumper and
hanging onto his "peoples!"

LOVE!

Oh, precious boy, those eyes melt my heart!

Katherine, Tammy, and Sawyer playing with Play Doh!

Trying to juggle like cousin Michael!

Friday was a chill day at the house. We filled up the baby pool on the deck and played with water balloons. My parents also came down again and brought Sawyer a real drum set! He was ecstatic! They treated all of us to dinner at Chili's that evening!

Throwing water balloons off the deck!

This is the face you make when you see
your Mush and Papa getting drums out of
their car!!

SO excited!

Totally in love!! Praying that he'll always
have a passion for music...and use it for
God's glory!

Skills

Attempt at a family picture!

Saturday morning we packed up our cars and stopped in Asheboro to see the grandparents, and then came back to Reidsville (and reality)!

Lance and I were talking last night and decided that this is the best "vacation" we've had since we got married. We look forward to many, many more fun vacations with our sweet Sawyer!
