Skateboard
That little gray trailor looking thing on the floor...yeah...he had one foot on it and told me it was a skateboard...then he jumped up and did a trick. I don't know where he gets these things!!
Sawyer: 2 Years, 4 Months
Sleeping:
- Still not napping very often, but still doing great with going to his room for an hour and resting.
- We've had a few weeks of waking up really early (6:15/6:30), but I think we're getting back on track.
- We still change his diaper around 11pm and sometimes he'll still wake up wet the next morning! Blah...
- He still has a paci to sleep, but does well without it the rest of the day. We really want to take it away when he's two and a half...we'll see!
Eating:
- Sawyer is a wonderful eater and most days eats as much as I do at meal time.
- Favorite foods: broccoli, olives, cheese, yogurt, spaghetti, okra, pasta (LOVES penne noodles with a little butter and parmesan cheese), grapes, blueberries, avocado, cheese toast, french fries
- Dislikes: salmon
- If I ask him what he wants for lunch he always says chicken nuggets, french fries, and chocolate milk! He only gets that when we go to Chick-fil-a, which is probably once or twice a month!
Talking:
- I finally feel like we have conversations. I can understand most of what he's telling me. He still babbles some, but I think he's figuring out how things sound and how to put sounds together.
- He is definitely a talker...we don't have many quiet moments around our house!
Social Skills:
- I've been talking with him A LOT about how he needs to look at people when they talk to him and he needs to talk to them when they ask him something. Half the time he'll talk, the other half he's hiding or closing his eyes....
- We still have some separation anxiety, though it mostly consists of crying for a minute or two and then he's good to go. I am a little worried that it's going to get worse for a little while because he's moving up to the 2 and 3 year old Sunday School class and he's not very familiar with the teachers. We also start Toddler choir tomorrow night and I will be teaching a different choir than the one he's in.
- He definitely has children that he prefers to play with over others. His favorite friends are probably Aidan and Matthew.
Playing/Learning:
- He's awesome at shapes, colors, and numbers to 10.
- He's becoming more interested in the alphabet, probably due to the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" and an alphabet puzzle.
- He is beginning to sort like items. Today we sorted three different kinds of balls...tennis balls, wiffle balls, and glitter balls. He put them all in piles and if I held up a baseball or basketball he would say "same? Nooooo."
- Sawyer is obsessed with building...any kind of block or container will do!
- He loves interactive tv shows...Dora and Bubble Guppies are his favorite. He's like Lance and memorizes anything that comes on tv!
- Sawyer's fine motor/pre-writing skills are developing well. He will sit and color or draw for extended periods of time. He is also getting better with scissors. He loves play dough and paint!
- Next week I'll be starting some structured preschool activities with him and I'm really excited! I miss the classroom!
Discipline:
- For the most part, Sawyer is pretty obedient and well behaved. We try to be very consistent with discipline and consequences for disobeying.
- Our biggest issue right now is throwing fits when he doesn't get his way.
Spiritual Growth:
- Sawyer is moving up to the 2 and 3 year old Sunday School class and will be doing more structured learning instead of mostly playing. I am SO thankful for the teachers he's had for the past year and a half...I'm NOT ready for him to leave them!
- Sawyer says the sweetest prayers. We are trying to teach him that prayer is just talking to God so we don't do the "God is great, God is good" stuff with him. We want him to know that prayer is personal and not just something you memorize and say every day.
- We've been having our Bible time together in the afternoon. He likes to look for pictures of babies, and that's fine with me right now. I just want him to get in the habit of spending time in the Word each day.
- We start back to Toddler Choir this week, so he'll be getting even more scripture through song and dance. LOVE!
Potty Training:
- We haven't been doing anything at all as the doctor told me not to push him. But, tonight, Lance told him to sit on the potty before they took a shower (he said he ALWAYS pees as soon as he gets in the shower!) and he peed in the potty. I gave him 2 m&m's. Sawyer didn't seem excited or anything....just peed, got his candy, and went and got in the shower!

A First
Friday afternoon we took Sawyer to Mush and Papa's for his first sleepover without mommy or daddy!!! Lance and I went to our church's Sunday School Leaders Retreat at Camp Caraway, so it was a perfect time for Sawyer to spend the night without us since we were only 10 minutes away!
We had a wonderful time at the retreat. It was a great time of refreshing and growing closer to our church family. We even got to take some walks around the camp and spend some much needed time alone just talking about our future. But we sure did miss our little one!
Sawyer, of course, was a perfect little angel (or at least that's what they told me!) minus the "Great Shoe Show Meltdown of 2012!" Apparently after dinner my mom and sister wanted to take Sawyer to get some new shoes and he just wasn't having it. And, it probably didn't help that Papa and Uncle Adam were encouraging Sawyer's little fit! Other than that, they said he was wonderful. He ate really well (and ate a salad for the first time), slept well (even though my mom thought his swimmy diaper was his night-time pull up! LOL!), and obeyed well. My mom took him out to run errands and he helped her with the chores. Sawyer played baseball cards with my dad and spent some time with Meredith and Adam.
When we got back to my parents house Saturday afternoon, he didn't even care that we were there! He did, however, care that he had to leave Mush and Papa. He cried and cried and clung to Mush when I told him we had to go. But, that just made me happy, because I know that he had a great time and I know that he feels loved and safe and comfortable with them.
THANK YOU Mush and Papa (and Murf and Adam) for taking care of our little boy! We love how you love him and we love how he loves y'all! You are THE BEST!!!

He lasted all of 4 minutes when we hit 220. He was worn out! I'm quite sure Mush and Papa did the same thing as soon as we left the driveway! |

Afternoon Quiet Time
Lately I've been trying to read and journal during Sawyer's afternoon "nap" instead of in the morning. Last Monday, after he'd been in his room for an hour, I told him he could get up. He came running into the dining room and saw that I had my Bible and notebook out. He looked at me and said, "bible?" then ran to his room and came back with his Bible. Since then, we've been having our quiet time together. His time in the Word mostly consists of looking for pictures of babies, or pointing out Adam and "Mimi," but I'm praying that this (spending time in the Word) will become habit for him. Even though it seems small and insignificant since he can't read or even remember lots of the things that we read to him, he will know that reading his Bible is important and should be done every day. And there is nothing sweeter to this mama's eyes than seeing my little boy thumbing through the pages of his Bible.
You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. - Deuteronomy 11:18-20

Sawyer's Sayings and Doings...
Lance and Sawyer went to Taco Bell for lunch while I was out of town last weekend. Lance said that Sawyer had some nachos and cheese and Lance took one of his chips and dipped it in the cheese. Sawyer looked at him and said, "Dada..." (and then grabbed his chips and cheese and pulled them closer to himself) "....mines!"
When I got home from the lake Saturday Sawyer was so happy to see me. Suddenly he looked at me and said, "Prize, mama?" Well, I didn't have a prize as we don't make a habit of getting him something everytime we go somewhere. But, he asked so sweetly, so I gave him some of the cheerios I had in my food bag. "Thank you, mama," he said, as if I'd just given him the greatest gift ever. Never lose that sense of gratitude, sweet boy!
Lance picked Sawyer up the other night and Sawyer said, "Dada, I wanna touch the sky!" (sky...ceiling...it's all the same to a 2 year old.)
For the past week or so, Sawyer has been saying his own prayers before meals. Sweetest thing I've ever heard.
If Aidan is napping and Sawyer wants to play with him, he'll say, "Mama, I hear Aidan....Aidan wake up."

Sawyer's Latest Obsession
My boy is OBSESSED with blocks right now...any kind will do, but I think his favorite ones are the wooden ones we got out a couple weeks ago.
Our conversation usually goes something like this:
Sawyer: Mama, wanna play blocks?
Me: Sure, what are you going to build?
Sawyer: Church (or castle, or house)
He'll play for HOURS with his blocks and peoples. Sometimes we build a nursery room in our church and his peoples play in there. He also likes to make slides, steps, and bridges for them.
I LOVE watching his little mind at work!

He made this "castle" all by himself. I was impressed! |
This one required lots of help from mama! He carried it around a long time this morning. |

2 Year Old Fashions....
A Gabba shirt, swim trunks, and flip flops that are a size too small....that's what Sawyer tells me kids are wearing these days!
Don't worry...he only went to daddy's office like this...nowhere really important where people would question what kind of mother he has!!!

Auntie Tursta visits!
Auntie Tursta came to visit and brought Sawyer the coolest bowling set. You can stack the pins up high, or sit them on the ground like regular bowling pins...super cool!
Thank you for the awesome bowling set, Tursta! We've played with it TONS!!

Sawyer's Sayings and Doings...
Sawyer: "What doin, Mama?"
Me: "Just checking Facebook."
Sawyer: "Check the book???"
Aidan was upset and crying the other day and Sawyer walked in the room and said "Ok? Ok, Aidan?"
Lance always gives Sawyer a piggy back ride before bed. Last night while Lance was at youth Sawyer looked at me and said, "Ride, Mama." I asked him if he was ready for bed and he said yes. He hopped on my back, went and brushed his teeth, got in bed and went right to sleep!
"Ready, set, nine, go." Not sure where the nine comes from!
We went out to eat twice in one day with my parents when we were home for a visit. At the first restaurant, Sawyer was such a little flirt with the waitress!! He LOVED giving her the tip, and when we were all giving her our plates, he had to give her his, too. At the second restaurant, he told the waitress he wanted a hot dog. He also wanted to give her any empty plate he could find, and he gave her the money. The funniest thing was that someone in the kitchen dropped some dishes and Sawyer yelled out "WOAH....What that???? What that, Mama?!" It was beyond hilarious.
I asked Sawyer what he wanted for lunch (and didn't really expect an answer)...."I wanna eat chichen nuddets, ketchup, hot dog, cheese, bock (broccoli), berries, wowurt (yogurt)....in my mouth...mmm...good!"
My friend Sarah was keeping nursery at church Sunday and she said Aidan was playing with a hula hoop and they were talking about sharing. She said Sawyer said in the nicest little voice "My want share" and quickly stole the hula hoop from Aidan!
As soon as we walked out of nursery Sunday, he looked at me and said "I cry church." When I talked to the nursery worker she said he didn't shed a tear and did great at drop off. Go figure!
The other night Lance was reading to Sawyer about baby Jesus. He got so excited and flipped through his entire Bible looking for "nother one baby!"
I gave him a hot dog for lunch one day. When he started eating I asked him what he was eating and he said "no hot dog....cold dog!"
We were on the phone with Mush and she asked Sawyer if he wanted to come see her. He looked at me and said (in a super high pitched voice) "More Mush and Papa!!"
Sunday night we had our annual World Changers Report and Lance had a slideshow of pictures to go along with it. Ward, Jen, and Aidan were sitting at the table with us and Ward was talking to Aidan. Sawyer looked at him, and as serious as he could be he said, "Ward, watch the show!"
Gick = get it..."I gick the ball."
Every morning when he wakes up he says "Hi, mama." Then I ask him if he's had a good sleep and he says yes. Then he holds up his little pointer finger and says, "One pa-pa (paci)? One pa-pa, Mama?" He usually gets to have it for 5 minutes or so then he goes and throws it back in his bed.
He's always called chocolate milk, "ma-milk." Now he's started saying "Chocate ma-milk."
As we turned onto our road Saturday after our visit to Asheboro, Sawyer realized where we were and started crying and saying, "I want Mush and Papa" over and over and over.

Lunch Break
Sawyer loves when Daddy comes home for lunch! And, so does Mommy...it means I can go to the bathroom BY MYSELF!! But, seriously, we're so thankful that Lance's job has so much flexibility and we can spend a little time together during the day!
Beautiful Day, Beautiful Boy
Praise the Lord, it's starting to cool down a little!! We spent nearly all morning outside under the carport.
So incredibly thankful for this sweet soul. |
